Mt Tam Habitat Restoration - Cape Ivy Removal

Mt. Tamalpais State Park
At the Steep Ravine Trailhead on Shoreline Highway (Hwy 1), 9am-12pm on Saturday 4/26

Join us for some volunteer habitat restoration work in Mount Tamalpais State Park, taking out invasive Cape ivy (and picking up any stray litter while we're at it!).

Like other invasive ivies, it can create carpets that exclude native plants, including tree seedlings. When it covers trees extensively, it can prevent them from getting necessary sunlight and weight them down, making them more vulnerable to toppling in storms. Beyond that, this particular ivy species also contains toxic alkaloids that can harm fish if the plant soaks in water.

With that in mind, we're having some volunteer workdays remove Cape ivy around the bottom of Steep Ravine Trail.

We will remove plants by hand-pulling and bagging (if left, Cape ivy will re-root!). Gloves are required for handling this plant. There will be a limited number of loaner gloves available, but participants should bring their own if they have them. Participants should also bring water bottles and sun protection. Long sleeves and long pants are recommended as ticks may be present and poison oak is present.
